Did Jesus Choose Trump?

To my fellow Christians who support Trump:

I’ve heard you say he’s God’s chosen president, and if I don’t support him, I don’t know Jesus.

Well, after a lifetime of going to church and reading the Bible, this is what I’ve concluded:

If the Son of Man, who wandered homeless through this world with nowhere to lay his head, chose a president from a penthouse with a golden toilet…

If the One who said, “Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and everyone who humbles himself will be exalted,” chose a president who boasts of being best at everything…

If the One who commands us to love our enemies, turn the other cheek, and forgive seventy-seven times seven times, chose a president who lashes out in retaliation for the smallest perceived attack…

If the One who said it was better to pluck out your own eye than let it tempt you into adultery chose a president who cheated on all three of his wives…

If the One in whom there is no falsehood, who came to testify to the truth, chose a president whose every speech is full of “alternative facts”…

If the Brother of the Poor, who fed the hungry and told the rich it was easier for a camel to pass through a needle’s eye than for them to enter heaven, chose a president who makes the rich richer while the poor starve…

If the One who spent his childhood as a refugee in Egypt, and commands us to welcome the stranger, chose a president who calls immigrants “animals” and locks asylum-seekers in cages…

If the One who tore down the dividing wall of hostility between nations chose a President who wants to build one…

If the Chief Cornerstone, who unites the races and nations of humanity within himself, chose a president whose greatest admirers are white nationalists who openly display the swastika…

If the Wounded Healer, who sent out his disciples to heal the sick, chose a president who put a stranglehold on health care during a global pandemic…

If the Prince of Peace, who commands us to be bearers of love and reconciliation, chose a president who foments hate and division…

If the Sun of Righteousness, who came to bring justice to the oppressed, chose a president who watches silently while police murder unarmed citizens with impunity…

And if the One who could have summoned an army of angels, but instead went alone and defenseless to give up his life, chose a president who would sooner summon an army of paramilitary thugs than give up his power…

If God chose a president who embodies the opposite of everything I always believed Jesus stood for…

Then I guess you’re right:

I don’t know Jesus.
